Response to Breath of Fire Documentary

I'm writing today because I want to acknowledge the recent release of the Breath of Fire series on HBO Max. This docuseries examines the power dynamics, abuse and dysfunction of some of the teachers and communities within Kundalini Yoga and 3HO. If you’ve watched or heard about it, I imagine it may have stirred a range of emotions—questions, concerns, or even grief.

The experiences covered in the documentary are outside my firsthand knowledge, but from what I’ve understood, it offers an honest depiction of these varying events.

What I know for certain is that Yogi Bhajan’s abusive actions are tragic. I stand with and fully support the survivors who have shared their stories. Like many, the past five years have been a time of painful reckoning for me, grappling with how a leader of such profound and transformative practices could also cause deep harm.

As is true for many spiritual traditions facing the impact of abusive leadership, this moment is an opportunity to reconcile past harm and for a personal and communal reflection, learning, and awakening. It challenges us to reclaim our self-authority and co-create communities grounded in integrity, transparency, and mutual empowerment.

I know that many of you may never have experienced the harm or abuse demonstrated in this documentary within 3HO or Kundalini Yoga classes, which may be confusing too. It's often those in the inner circle and closest to the teacher who experience this kind of abuse, although dynamics of control can trickle down through the greater community in some cases.

I continue to deeply believe in the transformative power of Kundalini Yoga. When approached with integrity and balance, these sacred practices of breath, movement and sound have the capacity to heal, uplift, and empower. At the same time, I recognize the potential for harmful dynamics when power is misused and vulnerabilities are taken advantage of.

In these times which are already heavy with challenges, this may feel like an added burden for those connected to Kundalini Yoga and 3HO. If this has brought up questions, emotions, or concerns for you, I invite you to reach out. Please feel free to reply to this email—I am here to connect, listen, and share what clarity I can.

I remain committed to creating a path forward with sincerity, authenticity, and integrity in the practices I offer. Thank you for being part of this community.
