Akaal Mantra
In the Sikh tradition, when a soul passes from this earth, the mantra to chant is Akaal, which means timeless, deathless and immortal.
Chanting this mantra, especially for the 17 days after death, supports the soul in their journey home, to cross from this physical plane through the ethers to reunite with the One. This sacred sound supports the soul in their freedom and liberation.
When we chant this mantra, it also supports us in remembering that the soul is eternal, and that we are always connected, beyond time and space. We affirm that the soul lives on in its new form. When we call out these sounds with our voice, it's an expression of our grief. By chanting this mantra, we find comfort in the knowledge that the souls of our loved ones are always with us, despite the physical separation.
The word Akaal, pronounced in English, sounds like “uh-call”. The second syllable is emphasized with a long “aah” sound, which is extended for the complete exhale of the breath. This “aah” sound opens the heart and helps the grief to move.
If you'd like to practice for yourself, whenever you hear of any soul’s passing, chant Akaal 3 or more times. You could do this once or chant throughout the 17 days of transition. If you missed the 17-day time period, you can always chant Akaal with the intention to support the soul in their liberation and returning home, as well as to comfort yourself and relate to the eternal nature of every being.
I've created a playlist for you with two different types of Akaal songs. It has both songs that focus solely on the Akaal mantra to chant along and immerse yourself in its sacred sound current as well as songs that are inspired by Akaal and accompanied by poetic English lyrics to describe the experience of Akaal.
